Congress MLA I.C. Balakrishnan on Monday filed a complaint with the Wayanad District Police Chief demanding an investigation into what he alleged as “fake documents” linking him to the suspected suicide of the Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) treasurer N.M. Vijayan and his son Jijesh.
The Congress district leadership also rallied behind him, even as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI9M)] stepped up protests demanding his resignation.
In his complaint to the police, Mr. Balakrishnan said that he had not instructed anyone to collect money on his behalf. The letter purportedly written by Vijayan to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee and an alleged document signed by the deceased and a job-seeker regarding payment for appointments, both of which had Mr .Balakrishnan’s name on it, were fake, he said.
He has also demanded action against those who are circulating the “fake documents” as well as an investigation to ascertain whether anyone had collected money in his name.
Speaking to the media, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee working president T. Siddique MLA said that the party would not tolerate any attempt to isolate and attack Mr. Balakrishnan.
The CPI(M) has alleged that the father and son were the victims of a Congress-controlled cooperative bank job scam involving Mr. Balakrishnan.
On Monday, party workers took out a protest march to Mr. Balakrishnan’s MLA office.
CPI(M) Wayanad district secretary K. Rafeeq told the media that Mr. Balakrishnan’s complaint to the police revealed that he was fearful of being punished if a proper investigation was carried out. The investigation should also focus on the increase in the MLA’s assets compared to the affidavit he filed during elections, Mr Rafeeq said.
The KPCC, which could have saved the two lives by intervening at the right time, should also shed its silence over the issue, he said.
