Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar addressing the media in Guntur on Friday.
The Tenali police have arrested seven persons for their alleged involvement in multiple chain-snatching and theft cases in Guntur and Bapatla districts.
Guntur Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar told the media here on Friday that 162 grams of stolen gold jewellery, worth ₹16.12 lakh, and five stolen motorcycles were recovered from the possession of the accused.
The accused had been committing offences using the stolen motorcycles for the last two years, the police said.
The main accused, Potharlanka Sai Madhav (21), a resident in Tenali, along with his accomplices, targeted women in public places.
Despite their involvement in multiple incidents, no cases had been registered against them, Mr. Satish Kumar said. Investigations revealed that the stolen jewellery was handed over to an accomplice, Sheikh Maqbool, who sold it for cash, which the gang used for personal luxuries.
The police traced the accused using CCTV footage and advanced surveillance techniques, Mr. Satish Kumar said, and urged people to install CCTV cameras in their residences and help in prevention of crimes.
