The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has made a call to ensure a green protocol for Attukal Pongala this year. Mayor Arya Rajendran has appealed to devotees to follow the green protocol while taking part in the festival so that the amount of waste generated after the Pongala can be reduced considerably. As part of the protocol, devotees need to bring only steel tumblers and plates in order to limit the use of plastic.
Voluntary organisations and clubs which are organising food and drinking water distribution for the devotees should avoid the use of cups and plates made of disposable material, including plastic or paper. Plastic water bottles should also be completely avoided. Drinking water can be collected in large containers, from which it can be distributed using steel tumblers.
For decorations, environmental-friendly materials should be used. Clubs, residents’ associations and voluntary organisations organising food and drinking water distribution need to register in the Smart Trivandrum mobile application available in the link https://smarttvm.tmc.lsgkerala.gov.in/pongala/registration.
As part of the green protocol campaign of the district Suchitwa Mission, a ‘green army’ of children has been formed. The Suchitwa Mission will organise awareness classes for them. Haritha Karma Sena members are also being deployed for awareness campaigns in various neighbourhoods in the city and in the surrounding panchayats.
