Tribal festival Nera Thinka kicks off at KIRTADS in Kozhikode

‘Nera Thinka -24’, a national tribal festival, began at the Kerala institute for Research Training and Development studies of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (KIRTADS) in Kozhikode on Tuesday.

The week-long festival features several aspects of the tribal culture such as food, art, literature, medicine, and handicrafts. Tribal communities from Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are taking part in the festival that also includes an ethnic food festival, ‘Uchal’, a tribal literary camp, ‘Bellibane’, a tribal medicine camp, and a tribal dance festival.

The ‘Toda embroidery’ products from Nilgiri, Tamil Nadu, ethnic cuisine from Maharashtra, various preparations of tubers by tribespeople in the Western Ghats, and bamboo baskets woven by tribeswomen from Nilambur are some of the attractions at the festival.

The event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The festival will be on till December 30.
