Ram Ramaswamy, retired Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad Central University, called upon the fresh graduates to use education for public good.
Delivering convocational address at the 34th annual convocation of Kuvempu University at Shankarghatta in Bhadravati taluk on Wednesday, Prof. Ramaswamy said, “Education comes with responsibility. Use it for public good. With this education we can achieve the targets we have set for ourselves. The targets could be social equity, better life, better life span among other things”.
He said the university was a place where the society invested on the future and train generations to think, discover, innovate and invent. The universities prepared the generations to change. In 1953, the life expectancy in India was around 37 years. “Now, it has reached almost 70. Over the years, education has improved and health care has improved. There have been so many changes over the years. Similarly, the population too has increased over the years. The increase in population would lead to many challenges,” he stated.
The present time has been termed anthropocene era the time when human activities have significant impact on earth. “We, humans, are only part of the chain, neither less nor more important than any other species. We are all part of the network and interconnected. Small things we do can cause large impacts both on us and on other species,” he cautioned.
Further, referring to falling air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR), Prof. Ramaswamy said he, being a resident of that area, would feel happy even if the air quality index was around 150. “When most of the days, the air quality index is around 300, we feel it a good when the index is around 150. However, I feel wonderful here in Shivamogga where the index is below 50,” he said.
