A vascular surgery hybrid theatre was inaugurated at the new campus of Christian Medical College (CMC) in Ranipet on Wednesday.
According to a press release, the surgical theatre was inaugurated by John C Oommen, Vice-Chairman, CMC (Council) in the presence of Vikram Mathews, director, CMC, and Anuvinda Varkey, chairperson, CMC (Council).
The surgical theatre, which will be maintained by the Department of Vascular Surgery, helps to perform complex operations to restore blood supply to affected parts of the body. It can be done by open surgery (from outside the blood vessels) and endovascular surgery (from inside the blood vessels).
Many patients require both open and endovascular operations – hybrid operations. The hybrid operation theatre will provide state-of-the-art vascular surgery operations, utilising cutting-edge technology. Patients from all over India come with vascular diseases in an advanced condition to CMC.
Vascular diseases often affect the economically disadvantaged, who are often breadwinners of their families. Providing world-class therapy in the hybrid theatre will bring healing and prevent disabling amputations, thus restoring the patients to their families and communities. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme will cover most of the operations in this theatre.
Aortic aneurysm endovascular stent graft, peripheral vascular arterial and venous stenting, carotid stenting, arterio-venous fistula salvage operations for kidney failure patients and open vascular bypass operations are some of the operations that will be performed in the hybrid theatre.
Patients with major vascular trauma can also be treated by combining interventional techniques, which will save lives. Intravascular ultrasound, which is used to image blood vessels, can be combined in real-time with angiographic imaging. This modern theatre can perform CT scans to enable more accurate deployment of stent grafts.
The hybrid theatre is capable of angiographic imaging of the whole body, thereby making it invaluable for patient care. The new facility can also be used for evolving technologies in vascular surgery and other allied disciplines in future, the release said.
