In anticipation of acute water shortage in summer, the Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation is bringing water from the Andhra reservoir, located almost 40 km away on the Champavati river.
The water is expected to reach the city within a few days. Flowing through Marrivalasa, Pittada, Mentada and Gajapathinagaram, it will enter the Champavati river water project near Nellimarla 5 km away. According to corporation officials, water from the reservoir would be supplied to Vizianagaram residents through the Nellimarla Master Pump House soon.
Currently, the corporation is supplying only 26.5 million litres a day (MLD) on alternate days against a requirement of 47 MLD because of limited water resources.
The Thatipudi reservoir on the Gosthani river is the city’s main water source. This reservoir also meets the industrial water needs of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
With inflows into the Gosthani river thinning, the VMC decided to source water from Andra project, which was constructed in 1983.
VMC Commissioner Palli Nallanayya said the corporation was trying to prevent leaks in the pipelines along the route. He also urged people not to waste the water.
