The Union Government on Thursday appointed the current Finance Secretary, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, as the new chief of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi).
He will replace Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term ends at the end of the month.
According to a government order, Pandey has been appointed as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India for three years.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Pandey as the new SEBI Chairman. He will have an initial term of three years.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue, to the post of Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), initially for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the government order said.
Who is Tuhin Kanta Pandey?
Tuhin Kanta Pandey is a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre and is currently the Finance and Revenue Secretary.
He also served as Revenue Secretary for less than two months but played a key role in restructuring income tax slabs and customs duties in the latest budget. He also led the drafting of the new Income Tax Bill, which is under review by a parliamentary committee.

Pandey was the Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), where he played a major role in the privatisation of Air India and the listing of LIC.
He has served in both the Union and Odisha state governments, including roles in the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), the Cabinet Secretariat, and the Ministry of Commerce. He also worked with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

Pandey holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the UK.
Services in Odisha
In Odisha, he held key administrative positions in the Departments of Health, Finance, Transport, and Commercial Taxes. He also served as Executive Director of the Odisha State Finance Corporation and Managing Director of the Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
