Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss on Sunday (March 30, 2025) urged the Tamil Nadu government to create separate Tamil teacher postings in government primary and middle schools, similar to high schools and higher secondary schools, and ensure appointment of Tamil teachers in private schools, where Tamil has been made a compulsory subject.

In a statement, Dr. Ramadoss said more than 50,000 graduates who completed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Tamil literature, along with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.,) degree, are struggling without employment in the State. Many of them are forced to take up jobs that do not match their qualifications.

“Tamil is being taught as a compulsory subject in government schools. However, no separate Tamil teacher postings have been created to teach Tamil up to Class VIII. Though the State had enacted a law to make Tamil a compulsory subject in private schools, it is not being enforced, leading to a situation where Tamil teachers are not being appointed in private schools. These are the fundamental reasons for the lack of employment opportunities for Tamil teachers in the State,” he said.

According to him, Tamil language can only be taught effectively to students by those teachers who have graduate degrees in Tamil. Despite repeated appeals from Tamil scholars over the years, successive governments have ignored this concern and this is an injustice to the Tamil language, he added.
