The Save University Campaign Committee has petitioned Governor Arif Mohammed Khan seeking his intervention against Mahatma Gandhi University for allegedly coercing an affiliated college to allow an expelled student to appear for examinations despite lacking the requisite attendance.
The controversy centres on Sreejith Subash, a Students Federation of India (SFI) leader and a member of the Board for Adjudication of Students Grievances, who pursued BSc in Mathematics at St. Aloysius College, Edathua.
The student was issued a compulsory transfer certificate in October 2023 after disciplinary actions were taken against him by the Principal for serious misconduct. Besides, he had attended only 6.5 out of 70 days during the fifth semester and had no attendance in the sixth semester.
As per the university’s regulations for undergraduate programmes under the Choice Based Credit System 2017, students must have a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible to appear for examinations, a requirement the student did not meet.
The college management has also petitioned the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, accusing the university of “harassing” its officials to enable the student to appear for internal examinations of the fifth and sixth semesters, and complete his sixth-semester project.
In addition, the college claims that the university has threatened to revoke the Principal’s appointment if its directive was not followed.
