Govt. will persuade tenants for reconstruction of century-old Devaraja Market: Minister Byrathi Suresh

Minister for Urban Development and Town Planning Byrathi Suresh on Friday said that the government will persuade traders/tenants at the century-old Devaraja Market here to cooperate and facilitate the project of razing the heritage market and reconstructing a new one in its place, assuring them that they would get back shops in the reconstructed market.

Speaking to reporters atop Chamundi Hills here, the Minister said the traders/tenants of the market need not doubt and worry about losing the shops once the market is demolished. “I have told the officials to speak to them, giving an assurance of shops in the new market building. They need to cooperate and support the government in its plan of reconstructing the market,” he said.

The government has proposed to demolish the Devaraja Market and the Lansdowne Building and reconstruct the buildings at a cost of ₹100 crore. Of the two projects, there is a court case on one. “We are trying to convince the traders and take them into confidence. They are expressing apprehensions about whether they would get back shops once the new market is built. We are addressing their concerns,” the Minister said.

Listing out the projects allotted for Mysuru and the CM’s directions, the Minister said the missing UGD connectivity in Mysuru city is being addressed with a ₹750 crore project being taken up soon. Two lakes will be taken up for rejuvenation besides the white topping of the city roads, as done in Bengaluru, for about 55 km in and around Mysuru. For these works, tenders will be invited in about three to four months, he said.

He said the roads in Mysuru will become long-lasting with the white topping project. There is no need for asphalting of roads for at least 25-30 years once the project is done.

The Minister said he has asked for preparing the DPR for the peripheral ring road in the city.

Later, Mr. Suresh held a progress review meeting at the Mysuru City Corporation. MLAs, G.T. Deve Gowda and T.S. Srivatsa, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, and others were present.
