Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written a letter to Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, seeking his intervention to review the move to merge RMS (Registered Mail Service) offices with Speed Post hubs and retain some of the RMS offices in Kerala.
In the letter addressed to Mr. Scindia, Mr. Vijayan said the department of Post has decided to merge RMS offices with speed post processing hubs and integrate the processing of registered post services with speed services.
This will result in the permanent closure of 12 RMS offices in Kerala and a total of 312 RMS offices in the country. RMS services have traditionally been relied upon by a significant number of users in the State. It is apprehended that the closing down of RMS offices will adversely impact the efficiency of the entire postal system.
The Chief Postmaster General (Kerala) has recommended that six additional intra-circle hubs be created in addition to the four (Alappuzha, Thodupuzha, Tirur, and Kasaragod) approved by the Directorate of the department of Post. “Considering the extensive network being served by the RMS and its vital role in communication services in the State, I request your intervention to retain Shoranur, Vadakara, Aluva, Irinjalakuda, Thalassery, and Kayamkulam also as intra-circle hubs in the State in addition to the four already approved,” said the Chief Minister in the letter.
