Mumbai reported its first death from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) after a 53-year-old patient suffering from the disease died on Wednesday, ANI reported, citing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
This is the eighth death in Maharashtra from the rare neurological disorder.

According to the Maharashtra health department, 192 people are suspected to have Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) as of February 11. So far, 172 cases have been confirmed and eight deaths have been reported.
Mumbai reported its first case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) on Friday after a 64-year-old woman was diagnosed with the disorder, officials said. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said to PTI that she is being treated in the ICU of a civic hospital.
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and sometimes paralysis. Symptoms often begin with tingling and weakness in the legs, progressing to the upper body and arms.
The exact cause of GBS is unknown, but it is often preceded by an infection. While the condition can be life-threatening if severe, most individuals recover with appropriate medical treatment.
