A material recovery facility has been inaugurated in the coastal village of Chellanam as part of the ‘Chelode Chellanam’ project, jointly undertaken by CII Foundation and the General Insurance Corporation. The programme aims to provide a long-term and sustainable solution to waste disposal challenges faced by the region.
Ernakulam District Collector N.S.K. Umesh, Chellanam grama panchayat president K.L. Joseph, and MLA K.J. Maxi were among those present at the inauguration of the facility on Friday (February 28, 2025).
The facility is expected to enhance waste segregation and processing while addressing issues such as indiscriminate dumping and open burning of waste, according to CII Kerala chairman Vinod Manjila.
The project has expanded its reach from 5,747 to 7,800 households. The number of families adopting bio-bins has also increased significantly, rising from 50 in the initial phase to 450. Besides, the initiative has economically empowered members of the Haritha Karma Sena, whose collective annual income has now risen to ₹4,06,300. The project has also introduced measures to improve operational efficiency and ensure medical support for sanitation workers, according to the organisers.
