Online frauds pocket ₹54 lakh from two in Kalaburagi

Despite several awareness drives by the cyber police, people continue to fall prey to online frauds.

In the latest of such crimes, two people from Kalaburagi were cheated of ₹54 lakh in as many incidents by fraudsters and two cases have been registered at the Cyber, Economic Offences and Narcotics (CEN) Police here.

In one of the cases, a resident of Aiwan-e-Shahi area Aparna N. Jawali has lost ₹47.50 lakh to an online fraud.

Initially, the victim lost ₹89,000 believing in a message that claimed that she could earn money by watching video links that flashed on her mobile phone and sending a screenshot of them.

When she contacted the customer care number to complain about the fraud and retrieve the amount she had lost, the fraudsters, who spoke under the guise of customer care, further accessed the victim’s bank details and transferred ₹46.50 lakh from her account, the complaint stated.

In the other case, B. Chandrashekar of Vidyanagar lost ₹6.80 lakh after investing in online trading on a WhatsApp group.

The fraudster suggested to him that he invest in a particular advisory group for earning more profits. Chandrasekhar invested the money as per the guidance of the fraudsters and initially, received some dividend money.

Motivated by this, he invested ₹14.80 lakh. However, the fraudsters returned only ₹8 lakh cheating him of ₹6.80 lakh.
