The intense spell of heavy rain that pounded several parts of the district threw life out of gear and caused water inundation in several lying areas in the city on Friday.
The rain that began on Wednesday evening continued till Friday. The sky was overcast throughout the day and there was incessain heavy rain with minor breaks. Almost all parts of the district, including Tiruchi town, airport, Pullampadi, Samayapuram, Manapparai, Musiri, Vathalai, Manikandam, Vaiyampatti, and Thuraiyur received moderate to heavy rain.
The district registered 52.26 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Friday with Pullampadi recording a maximum of 94.2 mm followed by Nandiyar Head 87.4 mm and Samayapuram 84 mm. Tiruchi Junction registered 65.4 mm rain, Tiruchi town 61 mm, and Tiruchi airport 48 mm respectively.
With heavy rain continuing during the day on Friday, several low-lying areas in the city were inundated. A large number of houses in Crawford, Anbu Nagar, Krishnamurthy Nagar, Sakthi Vinayagar Koil Street, T.S. Nagar, Dheeran Nagar, Karumandapam, Linga Nagar, Woraiyur, Selva Nagar, New Selva Nagar, Thiru Nagar, R.M.S. Colony, and Navalpattu were in knee-deep water. The residents had to wade through the water to buy essentials and commute to other parts of the city. Rainwater entered several houses in Edamalaipattipudur. Parts of Vazhavanthankottai was severely hit as the roads were flooded.
Several arterial ways, including Salai Road and Old Madurai Road, were flooded. With the open drains clogged in many parts of the city, the residents complained of sewage water mixing with rainwater on the streets.
“We encounter tough times because of knee-deep water on the streets. The cause of concern is the stagnation of water mixed with sewage,” says Mohamed Ali, a resident of Thiru Nagar in Karumandapam.
Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru visited various parts of the flooded areas in the city. He was accompanied by Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan, Mayor M. Anbazhagan and senior officials.
Wading through the water on the streets of Edamalaipattipudur, Mr. Nehru enquired about the causes of water inundation in residential colonies. He instructed the officials of the Tiruchi Corporation to take steps to drain out water on the streets.
Villages cut off
Several parts of Karur district, including Aravakurichi, Anaipalayam, K. Paramathi, Kulithalai, Thogaimalai, Krishnarayapuram, Mayanur, Panchapatti, Kadavur, Palaviduthi, and Mayilampatti, recorded incessant heavy rain disrupting life.
Pillur and Muthugoundampatti were cut off due to the heavy flow of water on the causeway at Pillurpirivu near Thogamalai.
With the discharge of surplus water from the Amaravathi dam, the district administration had sounded flood alert to the people living along the Amaravathi.
