Residents of Melavaladi in Tiruchi staging a protest on Monday against the proposed merger of their village with Tiruchi City Corporation.

Residents from Appadurai in Melavaladi near Lalgudi submitted a petition to the District Collector on Monday opposing the merger of their village with the Tiruchi City Corporation.Â
The residents said it was still an agrarian village and urged the government to merge the village with the nearby Pudukudi village panchayat instead of the Corporation.
Residents from nine villages resorted to a road blockade in Somarasampettai near Tiruchi objecting to the merger of their village with the Corporation. The protest began at 8 a.m. and lasted till 1 p.m. About 270 women and 70 men were detained, the police said. Â
