NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Tuesday heightened security around the Bangladesh High Commission in Chanakyapuri, a day after protesters stormed the Bangladesh consulate in Agartala, an official stated.
“The security has been increased and extra police personnel have been deployed all around the commission. We are also ensuring no gathering takes place around its premises,” a senior police officer told news agency PTI.
With the ongoing winter Parliament session, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remains active restricting gatherings of five or more people in central Delhi, the office added.
Earlier on Monday, a significant protest took place in Agartala where thousands protested against the detention of Iskcon priest Chinmoy Krishna Das and reported attacks on Hindu minority in Bangladesh.
The protesters reportedly forced their way into the Bangladesh assistant high commission in Agartala. This incident follows a reported attack on an Agartala-Kolkata bus in Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district on Vishwa Road, where the vehicle had been involved in an accident on Saturday.
Reports indicate that the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi is preparing to formally protest the “security breach” at their Agartala mission.
The breach comes amid escalating tensions between India and Bangladesh, exacerbated by rising attacks on Hindus and their places of worship in Bangladesh following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier this year.
The MEA on Monday denounced the intrusion at the Bangladesh assistant high commission in Agartala, labelling it as “deeply regrettable.”
“The incident earlier today of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh assistant high commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable. Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances,” MEA said in a statement.
“The government is taking action to step up security arrangements for the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi and their deputy/assistant high commissions in the country,” it added.
