The Tamil Nadu government on Monday issued orders for improving over 740 roads in rural areas in 37 districts at a total cost of ₹862 crore.

A total of 746 panchayat union and village panchayat roads for a length of 1,452 km were to be improved, the order issued by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department said.

While the construction cost is ₹804 crore, the maintenance cost is ₹58 crore.

The improvement work is to be taken up under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), a flagship programme of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
