The Tamil Nadu Government has sanctioned nine new mahout posts and two cavady posts for the Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp in the Ulandy Range of the Pollachi Division, Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
A Government Order (G.O.) was issued in this regard by Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Departments of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, on February 28 following a request from the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests for additional posts due to the increasing number of elephants under care.
With 26 elephants currently managed, including five retired elephants, the department required more mahouts and cavadies. The Forest Department has decided to create nine mahout and two cavady posts by surrendering 10 vacant tractor driver positions.
The G.O. said the department had long engaged local tribal communities in managing elephants, recognising their traditional knowledge and skills. These tribal workers, despite having limited promotional opportunities, developed a unique bond with the elephants, dedicating their lives to their care.
The financial requirement for these additional posts is estimated at ₹34 lakh annually, which will be funded by surrendering the vacant tractor driver posts. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests has been directed to fill the posts immediately, in line with the Tamil Nadu Forest Subordinate Service Rules.
