Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha paid a surprise visit to the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in Agartala on Saturday.
After his visit, Saha, who holds the health portfolio and is also a renowned maxillofacial surgeon, told reporters that government hospitals have a lot to learn from their private counterparts.
CM Saha said: “There is a huge load here. IGM Hospital is located right at the centre of Agartala city and is a very old hospital. Doctors and healthcare personnel are doing a great job under such pressure. However, there is a scope of improvement in terms of cleanliness… We have a lot to learn from the corporate sector in terms of hospital management. However, government-run hospitals spend 10 times more than what is spent in corporate hospitals. I have seen these issues today. This was the purpose of my visit. I shall soon sit down and solve the shortcomings I have seen here.”
The chief minister, though, said that health services at government hospitals have improved over the years.

“They (IGM Hospital) can be given 80 per cent marks but if we improve the rest of the shortcomings, they can get 100 per cent. Besides, problems will always be there. We have to work to resolve those problems,” Saha added.
The chief minister also visited the state-run Tripura Dental College, which is housed in the same complex as the IGM Hospital.
IGM Hospital, earlier known as the Victoria Memorial (VM) Hospital, was rechristened after former prime minister Indira Gandhi during its centenary year in 2004.
