United Democratic Front (UDF) councillor V.K. Minimol has put in her papers as the works standing committee chairperson of the Kochi Corporation.
This was following a decision taken by the Congress party. Initially, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) councillor Sunita Dixon served as the chairperson of the nine-member works committee as the UDF representative. Reportedly, the understanding was to give up the chairperson post to the Congress after one-and-a-half-year. Thereafter, Ms. Minimol was supposed to occupy the post for the next three years and councillor Seena for the remaining six months.
However, Ms. Dixon declined to step down claiming that there was no such understanding. Following this, the Congress moved a no-confidence motion against her. Later, the RSP and the Congress moved an election petition against her on the charge of violating the whip.
Anticipating disqualification, Ms. Dixon resigned last April. Ms. Minimol assumed the post on June 22. Though her term was till March 31, she chose to submit her resignation to the secretary on Saturday (March 29), considering the impending holidays. She occupied the post only for nine months instead of three years as was originally planned.
