A 65-year-old woman, S. Ramanamma, was murdered by some miscreants in the town in the early hours on Friday and her half-burnt body was found at her residence in Vennelavaripeta.
The victim, who was staying alone, was found with her hands and legs tied and is suspected to have been strangled to death, said the Eluru One Town police.
In-charge Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi formed special teams to detect the case.
“The accused poured petrol and set the body on fire in an attempt to make it appear like a fire accident, said Eluru Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) D. Sravan Kumar, who visited the spot.
On being alerted by the locals police rushed to the spot and found that some jewellery and cash was missing from the house, the DSP said.
