The All-India Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha has condemned the “derogatory statements” about 12th-century social reformer Basaveshwara made by MLA Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal.
In a strongly worded statement, the mahasabha said, “The mahasabha has been closely watching your [Mr. Yatnal’s] statements and also your conduct for so many years and we have our own doubts whether you are a Lingayat or not. It is unfortunate that you have not cultivated the practice and values of Veerashaiva Lingayats.”
At a rally on the waqf issue, Mr. Yatnal had told a group of farmers that they “too would have to jump into the river like Basavanna” owing to their land being allegedly acquired by the waqf board.
