The Agriculture Department has set 5.50 lakh hectares sowing target in Raichur district for the 2025-26 kharif season.
According to sources, of the 5.50 lakh hectares area to be covered, paddy is expected to be planted in approximately 2 lakh hectares, followed by red gram which will be sown in 1.20 lakh hectares, cotton in 1.80 lakh hectares, sunflower in 6,000 hectares and bajra and other crops in around 40,000 hectares.
The district has received adequate pre-monsoon rainfall prompting farmers to take up agricultural activities, including preparation of land. Rainfall recorded from January to May 19, 2025 stands at 111.1 mm against an average of 49.1 mm which is in excess of 126%.
The district requires 8,110 quintals of sowing seeds. Currently, 5,451 quintals of sowing seeds, including paddy 2,997 quintals and red gram 2,180 quintals, are available.
“All preparations have been made to ensure the availability of sowing seeds and fertilisers to farmers on demand basis. The district has been sanctioned 2.29 lakh tonnes of fertilisers. Now, 56,759 tonnes of fertilisers and 17.67 lakh packets of cotton sowing seeds are available,” Joint Director of the Agriculture Department T.C. Jayaprakash told The Hindu over phone.
