Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Ballari Range B.S. Lokesh Kumar has said that the death of a man in Raichur district after being assaulted by police officers will be handed over to the CID for investigation.
Addressing the media in Raichur on Wednesday, Mr. Lokesh Kumar said that Circle Inspector Nagaraju Meka and Sub-Inspector of Police Manjunath of Raichur West Police Station have been suspended after a case in connection with the death of a 27 year-old man, Veeresh, in Raichur on Tuesday was registered under Sections 115(1), 118(3), 133, 352, 103(1) r/w 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023 and Sections 3(1)(r)(s) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
The case was registered following a complaint by the victim’s sister, Jyothi, accusing both the officers of assaulting the victim during investigation of a family issue between him and his wife, after which he died of assault injuries in the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences in Raichur.
Mr. Lokesh Kumar also said that the officers of CID will reach Raichur to take over the case for investigation soon.
Immediately after the death, family members of the victim and MLA Shivaraj Patil and BJP workers staged a flash protest outside the office of the Superintendent of Police in Raichur and demanded action and also sought compensation for the victim’s family.
Following these developments, Superintendent of Police M. Puttamadaiah has placed both officers under suspension.
