Nagaveni Raichur, daughter of a construction worker and a housemaid from Hubballi, has secured the fifth rank in the Arts stream of II PU examination, the results of which were declared on Tuesday.
Pursuing her education amid odds, Nagaveni even worked part-time during vacation to support her parents. She is a student of the Government PU College at Gopanakoppa in Hubballi.
Nagaveni has scored 100 each in Geography and Political Science, 99 each in History, Education and Kannada and 96 in Hindi.
Nagaveni’s father Anthony Raichur is a construction worker, while her mother Sulochana works as a housemaid. Scholarships from various organisations and also financial assistance from her teachers helped her in paying the fee and purchase books.
While there was celebration at Gopanakoppa Government PU College after the announcement of the results, Nagaveni, however, was not fully happy as she had set her target on the first rank.
“I did not study hard but studied with interest. The college and my teachers helped me a lot,” she said and added that her goal is to involve herself in social service.
Her teachers celebrated the occasion, by distributing sweets and bursting crackers.
