Although there was some respite from rain that lashed Yadgir district continuously in the last couple of days, two major rivers, the Krishna and the Bhima, were flowing with a high quantum of water on Thursday, after authorities discharged water from the Basavasagar reservoir in Narayanpur of Yadgir district and the Sannati Bridge-cum-Barrage in Sannati village of Kalaburagi district.
Following water discharge, the tributaries of these rivers, which divide into several parts, have submerged several bridges.
A major bridge that is constructed across the Krishna between Kollur and Huvinadagi villages connecting Yadgir district with Raichur district has come under river waters.
The district administration and the local authorities have suspended traffic movement on the bridge diverting vehicles through alternative routes passing through Shorapur Bypass Road to reach Raichur.
Deputy Commissioner of Yadgir Harshal Bhoyar visited rain-hit areas, including the submerged bridge at Kollur village, to take stock of the situation.
He advised the authorities to ensure the safety of the people residing in the downstream areas of both Basavasagar and Sannati Bridge-cum-Barrage. He also directed them to take all possible initiatives to tackle flood-like situations.
Several hundred acres of agricultural fields were inundated with rain and river waters causing an extensive damage to cotton and green gram crops. “Efforts are on to assess crop damage,” Mr. Bhoyar told The Hindu.

The situation in Raichur district is also the same. Most of the bridges constructed downstream of Basavasagar are seeing a heavy amount of water flowing over them and several villages are facing a serious threat of flooding.
Sheelhalli, Yaragodi and Jaladurga village bridges are likely to come under river waters, sources said.
Considering the situation after the swell in the Krishna, the district administration in Raichur has issued an alert to people in the riverbank villages.
Deputy Commissioner Nitish K. said that officers have been asked to be ready to face the flood situation and directed them to initiate action, if required.
According to KBJNL sources, 2.68 lakh cusecs of water were discharged from Basavasagar into the Krishna at 2 p.m. on Thursday when 2.50 lakh cusecs was the inflow.
The water level stands at 490.61 m against a full reservoir level of 492.25 m.
Apart from that, the authorities discharged 70,000 cusecs of water from the Sannati Bridge-cum-Barrage into the Bhima.
