Raichur Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rahul Tukaram Pandwe has directed officials of the departments concerned to tackle drinking water problem in the district.
He was addressing a meeting held in Raichur on Thursday. The district has seven taluks with 1,438 inhabited areas in 179 gram panchayats. Of the 1,438 inhabited areas, 297 villages are getting drinking water through lakes, drawing water from the Narayanapur Right Branch Canal, and apart from that, rural areas are getting water from 2,570 borewells as well.
“You should submit a report on lakes that have less than 50% water and take steps to fill them, as per the resolution passed in the Irrigation Consultation Committee,” Mr. Pandwe told officers and added that all steps have to be taken to tackle the drinking water crisis during the summer season.
Mr. Pandwe specifically said that water resources should be protected and asked authorities to enter into an agreement with private borewell owners to get water from them where the groundwater level was likely to deplete.
“As many as 336 borewells have been drilled, and another 265 borewells should immediately be drilled to provide drinking water,” he said.
The CEO also suggested cleaning overhead tanks and plugging leakage in water supply pipelines. He asked the officers to ensure water supply to all villages and inhabited areas.
Deputy Secretary Shashikanth Shivapure, officers of the zilla panchayat, and taluk panchayats were present.
