Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen is far from impressed with Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh’s performance in the ongoing 2024 World Chess Championship match against China’s Ding Liren in Singapore. Five games have been played between the two so far, with the sixth game currently underway. After five games, both Gukesh and Liren are tied on 2.5 points each in the 14-game competition, with both having secured a win.

D Gukesh vs Ding Liren World Chess Championship, Game 6
Gukesh
began his campaign with a loss with white pieces, before drawing the second game with black pieces. The teenager
secured his first-ever classical win over Liren in the third match to level the scores 1.5-1.1.5. Since then, Gukesh and Liren have played two draws.
‘Gukesh has not impressed me’: Carlsen
“Gukesh has generally not impressed me so far. Ding has probably done a little bit better than we had thought. Well, we didn’t expect much (before the start of the world chess championship). But Gukesh has probably been a little bit worse,” Carlsen said in a video on the Take Take Take app.
Liren seemed to have the upper hand over Gukesh in the fifth game following the latter’s 25th move. Liren, however, made a poor judgement and Carlsen explained where he went wrong. “Playing knight c4 (25.Nc4) instead of knight to a4… I’m not shocked. But it was soft. Really really soft,” said Carlsen.

“In today’s game, even though we should criticise Ding for not going knight to a4 instead of knight to c4, it was a win for Ding. No doubt about it. It increased his chances of him winning the match and it probably increased his confidence in what he’s doing as well,” added the Norwegian.
‘Frustrating for Gukesh’: Carlsen on Game 5
The 34-year-old opined that Gukesh might not be happy with his performance in the fifth game on Saturday. “A game like today would have been frustrating for Gukesh a little bit, because he cannot really outplay Ding or get chances with the white pieces,” stated Carlsen.
After Sunday’s sixth game, the two players will have a rest day on Monday before returning to the chess board for the seventh game on Tuesday.
