D Gukesh vs Ding Liren, Game 14 World Chess Championship
“He didn’t have a single moment in the game where there was any risk to his position at all. So I think anybody practically would try and win in this situation, you know, he did his job very well for a long time,” Carlsen said on the Take Take Take app.
Gukesh began the game with a King’s Pawn opening to counter Ding Liren’s French Defense. “He found a nice idea and the French defence he put staying under a lot of pressure, and with a combination of skill and luck, Ding managed to managed to hold twitches, which was a quite likely outcome. I think Gukesh did a lot of things right,” added Carlsen.
Carlsen recalls Gukesh’s ‘best moment’
Carlsen said Gukesh’s “best moment” in the game was when he played Bishop f4 on 22nd move. “This was clearly Gukesh’s best moment of the game. This is where he shines, finding these unexpected tactical resources. You may, you may think that this is not difficult at all since it’s a double attack, but I would say this was a, this was a very good find from him,” said Carlsen.

“Because yes, it is a double attack, but it’s quite rare that you can attack two rooks at the same time with the queen and they cannot defend themselves like often if you secure two rooks, for instance, with, with the Bishop, like you can normally give up a Rook for, for a Bishop, you don’t lose a full rook. So it was clear that this was a bit of a mess from, from Ding,” explained the Norwegian.
