World chess champion Dommaraju Gukesh on Friday became the new World No. 3 in the live chess rating. Gukesh surpassed Fabiano Caruana and jumped a spot in the rankings after his unbeaten run in the ongoing Tata Steel Chess 2025 with his latest result being a draw against defending champion Wei Yi of China. Caruana, meanwhile, lost to Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaaa on Friday.

A total of 11 rounds at the 2025 Tata Steel Chess tournament in Netherlands have been completed and Gukesh has gained 16 points from the event so far. Gukesh currently has 2793.2 rating points in live rating, which is one point less than his personal record of 2794 points that he achieved in October last year. Arjun Erigaisi, Gukesh’s compatriot, has slipped to sixth place in the live rating after having lost 33 points. Arjun, who is winless at the Tata Steel Chess tournament, has 2767.5 points.

In the FIDE official rating, however, Gukesh remains fifth in the world with an Elo rating of 2777 and Arjun is fourth (2801). Magnus Carlsen is world No.1  with a rating of 2833 followed by Fabiano Caruana (2803) and Hikaru Nakamura (2802).

Gukesh keeps rising in chess rankings

In December, Arjun had become only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to
surpass the 2800 Elo rating mark.

Gukesh is
currently leading the Masters section of the 2025 Tata Steel Chess tournament with 8 points, 0.5 points than R Praggnanandhaa and Nodirbek Abdusattarov, who share the second place. Arjun Erigaisi, on the other hand, is in 13th place in the 14-player standings with 3.5 points.

So far, Gukesh has clinched five wins and six draws in 11 games at the Tata Steel Chess tournament. This is the 18-year-old’s first tournament since beating China’s Ding Liren to clinch the 2024 World Chess Championship title. Gukesh had defeated Liren with a 7.5-6.5 margin.

Just last week,
Gukesh surpassed Arjun to become India’s No 1 after he beat Anish Giri and Vincent Keymer in the Tata Steel Chess tournament, while playing out draws against Fabiano Caruana, Vladimir Fedoseev and Alexey Sarana. Gukesh was fourth then whereas Arjun was placed fifth.
