Popular Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh dedicated his “Dil-Luminati” concert in Chandigarh on Saturday for India’s D Gukesh,
who clinched the 2024 World Chess Championship title by beating Cina’s Ding Liren on Thursday.
“I dedicate the show to Gukesh because he (Gukesh) had thought of becoming a world champion and he became,” said Diljit. Gukesh became only the second Indian Grandmaster, after the legendary Viswanathan Anand, to win the World Chess Championship title. Gukesh, 18, also became the youngest-ever world chess champion.

He broke Garry Kasparov’s record after the Russian had won the title when he was 22 year old in 1985. Gukesh defeated Liren by a 7.5-6.5 scoreline.
Gukesh had begun the World Championship campaign against Ding Liren with a loss, but fought back in the second and third games with a draw and a win respectively. The two then played out seven consecutive draws before Gukesh took a 6-5 lead after Game 11. Ding then made it 6-6 in Game 12 before the two played out another draw in Game 13 to level the scores 6.5-6.5. In Game 14, a costly mistake from Liren
paved the way for Gukesh’s victory.
Diljit also delivered his iconic line “Punjabi aa gaye oye” (Punjabis are here).” He added that he had used the famous line at several events, including the Coachella Music Festival. Diljit also mentioned a famous dialogue from Allu Arjun’s Pushpa, saying: “Saala nahi jhukega toh kya jija jhuk jayega”.
