Elon Musk is interested in buying English football club Liverpool, the billionaire’s father has claimed. The footballing giants Liverpool, who currently lead the Premier League table, is presently owned by the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) who have already shot down the rumours. An FSG group spokesperson told the news agency The Associated Press that there was “no truth to these rumours.”

Musk interested in buying Liverpool

The rumours began after Elon Musk’s father Errol, in an interview with Times Radio, said that the American businessman is interested in buying Liverpool. “Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it,” Errol Musk said. “He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.”

“I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price.”

Errol also added that the family have relatives in Liverpool and that “we were fortunate enough to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with us — my family.”

Musk can be encouraged by the fact that FSG did sell a minority stake in Liverpool to US investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023 and president Mike Gordon had indicated back then that he would not mind bringing in more partners if they can help “ensure the club’s long-term financial resiliency and future growth.”

FSG has indicated they want new partners

“Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever. We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club’s long-term financial resiliency and future growth,” Gordon had said.

FSG’s ownership has helped Liverpool reestablish themselves as one of Europe’s top football clubs. The Merseyside club ended a 30-year wait for an English league title in 2020, just a season after lifting the Champions League trophy. This season, Liverpool is leading both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk has inserted himself into British politics following the center-left Labour Party’s victory in July. Using his social media platform, X, Musk has called for a new election, escalating tensions.

On Monday, Labour leader Keir Starmer criticised Musk, condemning the “lies and misinformation” that he claimed are eroding British democracy, in response to a series of attacks on his government.
