‘Up to the selectors’: Sunil Gavaskar’s blunt reaction on future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli | Cricket News

Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar said it was up to the selectors to decide the future of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the longest format.

Kohli and Rohit has been under tremendous scrutiny due to their failures with the bat which was one of the main reasons that India couldn’t cross the 200-run mark six out of nine times in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy.

“How long they continue is really up to the selectors, Gavaskar said in an interview to PTI.

“Now that India has failed to qualify for the WTC (World Test Championship) final, it would be pertinent to reflect on the reasons that (why it) happened,” he added.

Kohli scored 190 runs in 5 Tests while Rohit could only manage 31 in 4 matches as Australia reclaimed the BGT after 10 years.

Gavaskar also said that the repeated failures of the Indian batters had resulted in not only the recent debacle at Australia but also the embarrassing 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home.

“It is clear that in the last six months, the batting failed and that was the main reason that we lost matches that we should have won,” he said.

“So, if changes are required for the new cycle of the WTC which starts in mid-June in England, then hopefully the selectors will take into account who would still be there for the final in 2027 and choose accordingly,” the veteran added.

The Indian Test team have been in a lean patch for he last few months, winning just 1 match out of their last 8.
