New chess world champion from India, D Gukesh has decided to skip the year-ending FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship but he will soon be back in action, in January 2025 for what looks like a jam-packed calendar year of thrilling action for the 18-year-old. Gukesh became the youngest chess world champion on 12 November after
beating China’s Grandmaster Ding Liren in a best-of-14-game series in Singapore. He is also the second chess world champion from India after the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

The 2025 calendar for Gukesh will start as early as January and the Chennai lad is scheduled to play multiple matches against world No.1 Magnus Carlsen, Arjun Erigaisi, and Anand.

Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025

The first chess tournament for Gukesh in 2025 will be the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025 which will take place at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. It will be played from 17 January to 2 February. Besides Gukesh, the tournament will feature local hero Anish Giri, Fabiano Caruana, India’s Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, and Vidit Gujrathi among others. China’s Wei Yi won the Tata Steel Chess Tournament last year with Gukesh coming second.

Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025

The organisers have confirmed that Gukesh will be taking part in the first tournament of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 in Germany. It will be played from 7 to 14 February in Weissenhaus. Here Gukesh will face Carlsen and Anand.

The nine confirmed participants:

– Magnus Carlsen (Norway, number 1 in the world rankings)
– Fabiano Caruana (USA, number 2)
– Hikaru Nakamura (USA, number 3)
– Gukesh Dommaraju (India, number 5)
– Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzbekistan, number 6)
– Alireza Firouzja (France, number 7)
– Viswanathan Anand (India, number 10)
– Levon Aronian (USA, number 11)
– Vincent Keymer (Germany, number 19)

The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 will have five tournaments starting in Germany. The remaining four tournaments will be played in Paris/France (8-15 April), New York/USA (17-24 July), Delhi/India (17-24 September), Cape Town/South Africa (5-12 December).

There’s no confirmation if Gukesh will play in all five tournaments.

Norway Chess 2025

Gukeesh will be returning to Stavanger after missing Norway Chess in 2024. The Norway Chess 2025 will take place from 26 May to 6 June. Carlsen won the Norway Chess last year and will be the favourite again. Apart from Carlsen, Gukesh will face Erigaisi and Wei Yi in Norway.
