Donald Trump calls US plane crash that killed 67 ‘amazing’, blames air traffic technology

Spread the News

President Donald Trump on Thursday compared last week’s deadly collision of a passenger jet and Army helicopter near Washington that killed 67 people, to a golf driving range, calling the incident “amazing” and saying it would lead to improvements in the air traffic control system.

Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast at the US Capitol, Trump said the crash revealed lapses in the country’s air traffic control technology. “It’s amazing that it happened,” he said. “We should have had the proper control. We should have had better equipment. We don’t, we have obsolete equipment. They were understaffed for whatever reason. I guess the helicopter was high. And we’ll find out exactly what happened,” Trump added.

Trump, in a bizarre comparison, linked the incident to a golf range. “Did you ever see, you go to a driving range in golf and you’re hitting balls, hundreds of balls, thousands of hours? I never see a ball hit another ball. Balls going up all over the place. You never see ’em hit. It was amazing that that could happen,” he said.

He also said the country had spent large sums trying to upgrade an old system instead of replacing it with a new one. Citing his private jet, he said he relied on a system from another country because the US system was “obsolete.”

On January 29, an American Airlines flight from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The crash was one of the deadliest aviation accidents in the US in decades.

Initially, Trump had blamed diversity hiring programmes for the crash. On Thursday, he pointed to outdated air traffic control technology as the cause.
