An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region early Wednesday morning, sending tremors across parts of northern India, including Delhi-NCR. The quake occurred at 4:43 AM (IST), according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The NCS reported that the earthquake originated at a depth of 75 kilometers below the surface, with its epicentre located approximately 164 kilometers east of Baghlan, a city in northern Afghanistan that is home to around 108,000 people.
Although the quake was strong enough to potentially cause significant damage near the epicentre, no reports of casualties or structural damage have surfaced so far.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) offered a slightly different assessment, recording the magnitude at 5.6 and the depth at 121 kilometers. Both agencies, however, identified the same general location for the epicentre.
This seismic event is the latest in a series of tremors that have rattled several regions across Asia in recent days. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents in affected areas have been urged to stay alert but calm.
